Christopher Columbus was notoriously ruthless, and his extreme cruelty was well-documented by contemporaries, including Spanish authorities and a priest who accompanied his expedition. His ruthless actions were directed toward both the indigenous peoples of the Americas and Spanish colonists, leading to his arrest and removal as governor.

To meet gold quotas, Columbus instituted a “tribute system” on the Taino and Arawak people of Hispaniola. Every person over 14 was required to bring a specific amount of gold every three months. Those who failed were punished by having their hands cut off and were left to bleed to death.

Columbus started the transatlantic slave trade by capturing and shipping thousands of Native people from Hispaniola to Europe. Many died during the voyage. He also facilitated the sexual exploitation of Native girls.

A priest named Bartolomé de las Casas, who witnessed the events, described horrific acts of violence committed by Columbus and his men, including the murder of infants. Historians estimate that the Native population of Hispaniola plummeted from millions to fewer than 500 within decades of Columbus’s arrival due to slavery, murder, and disease.

Columbus’s harsh and ineffective governance in Hispaniola led to rebellion among the colonists, who reported his tyranny to the Spanish Crown. In 1500, a royal commissioner was sent to investigate and found the accusations of brutality and abuse to be true, leading to Columbus’s arrest and return to Spain in chains.

This toll includes deaths from famine, political executions, forced labor, and systematic human rights abuses over more than 70 years.
