A preview of what will happen if the GOP controls all three branches of the federal government

To find out, start by looking at North Carolina. Diane Ravitch reports, “In 2010, Republicans swept control of the Legislature in North Carolina for the first time in a century. Two years later, a Republican governor was elected. Since then, the Republicans have sought to shred any safety net for anyone who needed it.” Click the link in this paragraph to read the rest. It’s much worse than you might think.

What is happening in North Carolina is the perfect far-right conservative storm to destroy the United State if the GOP continues to add states to its list and seats in both Houses of the U.S. Congress. If the GOP wins the presidential election in 2016 and keeps both Houses of Congress along with its current five seat conservative majority in the Supreme Court, what is happening in North Carolina will repeat across the country in every state. America will become the House of Punishment and prison populations will soar along with more laws designed to send people to those prisons for longer sentences. If you think America is a free country, then why are so many Americans in prison—the U.S. is ranked number one? Guess who is #2 and #3. Click the link in this paragraph to find out.

For instance, who started the war on drugs? A GOP president. His name was Richard Nixon, the only president of the United States to resign from office to avoid facing impeachment. In the late 1970s, under President Carter, a Democrat, drug arrests fell. But the overall trend starting in the 1980s was upward with increased arrests. Who was the GOP president during the 1980s—one guess?

Under GOP President George H. W. Bush, who was president from 1989 to 1993, drug arrests climbed again, and then under Clinton they fluctuated, but under President G. W. Bush, arrests started to climb again. Drug arrests in 2006, were 3.25 times what they were in 1980.

Imagine, ending up in prison because of an addiction that is a disease.

What Is Drug Addiction?

Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her. Although the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary for most people, the brain changes that occur over time challenge an addicted person’s self-control and hamper his or her ability to resist intense impulses to take drugs. – Drug Abuse.gov

This is a preview of our world if the GOP rules the United States without the possibility of compromise—a world where women can go to prison for taking pain killers when they are pregnant, and that is already happening in some states dominated by the GOP.

Take a Valium, Lose Your Kids, Go to Jailpropublica.org

In Alabama—a state dominated by the GOP—anti-drug fervor and abortion politics have turned a meth-lab law into the country’s harsher weapons against pregnant women.

Other States that Take a Hard Line:

  • South Carolina – 100% GOP dominated
  • Tennessee – 100% GOP dominated
  • Wisconsin – 100% GOP dominated

The GOP will win if too many registered Democrats and independent voters do NOT vote, because that is the reason the GOP has been winning elections in recent years—not because the majority of Americans are voting for far-right conservatives. Voters also have to be aware of fake Democrats running for election. Some of them are neo-liberals, and it is arguable that only fools and ignorant people vote for neo-liberals.

  1. here is an essay by the senior editor at Oped, which addresses how I fee about our government.

  2. Interesting post Lloyd. I find many of the things happening currently terrifying. I do not see why the abortion issue has to be black or white, but have a more complex solution. Only about 1% of pregnancies are caused by rape and incest and of course those women should have the choice to end their pregnancies. Also girls 18 and under regardless of the circumstances. And naturally women whose lives are at risk. I find it painful that most abortions are elective and I wonder why people don’t use contraception rather than ending a life. (actually I do understand how it happens) but I hate the massacre of babies and the number of abortions. It also troubles me that the fetal tissues are sold and the buyers are allowed to look at the ultrasounds of their purchases but the would be mothers are discouraged from doing so to the point that Clinton wanted to make it so they are not allowed to. I do see that there is a moral issue involved in this and I also know that women are often in horrible economic circumstances. My own Great Grandmother gave herself an abortion for that reason. The whole issue is painful. As for your other points I think they are well taken. I wish I could say that I feel a great deal of enthusiasm for any of the candidates. I do think Bernie Sanders is a competent and practical man and admire many of the things he has said. Women still have it very hard and I hate to say that it is still really men who are the gate keepers. Best wishes,
    MJ Payne

    1. Thank you for the comment, and I also think we don’t have much of a choice among the candidates. I’m not even sure about Sanders. At the moment, I think I’m voting for the Green Party candidate for president.

As for the abortion issue, you said, “I find it painful that most abortions are elective and I wonder why people don’t use contraception rather than ending a life. (actually I do understand how it happens) but I hate the massacre of babies and the number of abortions.”

Do you know that “elective” means it is the choice of the woman—it isn’t by force? This means women have a choice to decide if they are ready to be a mother yet for whatever reason.

I agree about the contraception but even that is not always an option because of the far right fundamentalist Christians who want to decide how the rest of us are allowed to live our lives by supporting legislation that limits choice. As for babies being massacred, I think that is rather strong language and I think it is worth exploring. I see this as a learning moment.

For instance, only 3% of the medical services that Planned Parenthood offers to women are Abortion Services. 34% is contraception. 42% is STI/STD Testing & Treatment, 9% is cancer screening and Prevention and 11% is other women’s health services. Close down Planned Parenthood and a lot of women lose access to contraception and other vital health services.

I then turned to fact checkers to verify the allegations that Planned Parenthood or “profiting” from abortions, and no one has found any evidence that these claims being made by questionable far-right sites are true.

Richards, the Planned Parenthood president, said in a video response to the controversy: “The allegation that Planned Parenthood profits in any way from tissue donation is not true.”

      http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2015/09/defund-planned-parenthood-congressional-hearing-videos

Does a video show Dr. Deborah Nucatola admitting that Planned Parenthood engages in the illegal sale of tissue from aborted fetuses?

      The answer from Snopes: undetermined

The controversy prompted questions about the nature of the Center for Medical Progress, which describes itself as “a group of citizen journalists dedicated to monitoring and reporting on medical ethics and advances.” The organization’s Twitter and Facebook accounts are both just a few months old, and the only videos found on the group’s YouTube page are the two shown above, even though the organization has supposedly been engaged in a three-year long investigation.

      http://www.snopes.com/pp-baby-parts-sale/

Politifact rated the accusations against Planned Parenthood as FALSE. In other words, no one was making a profit of aborted fetuses. It was a smear campaign, and this is a tactic extremists of all kinds use all the time to achieve their goals.

How about aborted babies? When I think of a baby, I think of what we hold in our arms after the fetus is born. I have never heard of a baby being killed via an abortion.

      More facts:

89-92% of all abortions happen during the first trimester, prior to the 13th week of gestation (AGI/CDC).

In 2012, 7.2% of all abortions occurred between 14-20 weeks’ gestation; 1.3% occurred ≥21 weeks’ gestation (CDC).

      http://www.abort73.com/abortion_facts/us_abortion_statistics/

Now, let’s look at fetal development week by week to determine at what stage are most fetuses aborted:

      First Month

Your baby is an embryo consisting of two layers of cells from which all her organs and body parts will develop.

      Two Months
Your baby is now about the size of a kidney bean and is constantly moving. He has distinct, slightly webbed fingers.

      Three Months

By now your baby is about 3 inches long and weighs nearly an ounce. Her tiny, unique fingerprints are now in place.

THIS IS THE END OF THE FIRST TRIMESTER where 89-92% of all abortions take place. It is a fact that at 3 inches long weighing nearly an ounce, there is no brain yet. The average brain at birth weights 350 – 400 grams. The average weight of an adult human brain is 1,300 – 1,400 grams. There are only 28.3495 grams in ONE ounce, and the brain of a baby at birth weighs more than 12 times the weight of a fetus at the end of the first trimester. How can the abortion of a fetus that weighs almost one ounce without a brain be a massacre and cause pain to that fetus?

Four Months: weeks 17 to 20 where 7.2% of all abortions occurred between 14-20 weeks’ gestation

Your baby is now about 5 inches long and weighs 5 ounces. His skeleton is starting to harden from rubbery cartilage to bone.

Five Months: weeks 21 – 24 THIS IS WHERE the final 1.3% of abortions occur at ≥21 weeks’ gestation (CDC).

Eyebrows and eyelids are now in place. Your baby would now be more than 10 inches long if you stretched out her legs.

      Six Months: weeks 25 – 29

Your baby weighs about a pound and a half. His wrinkled skin is starting to smooth out as he puts on baby fat.

      Seven Months: weeks 30 – 31

By now, your baby weighs about 3 pounds and is more than 15 inches long. She can open and close her eyes and follow a light.

      Eight Months: weeks 34 – 37

Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds. His layers of fat are filling him out, making him rounder, and his lungs are well developed.

      Nine Months: weeks 38 – 41

The average baby is more than 19 inches long and weighs nearly 7 pounds now, but babies vary widely in size at this stage

      http://www.babycenter.com/pregnancy-week-by-week

What about brain development inside the womb?

The third trimester—after the SIXTH MONTH or 29th WEEK—is brimming with rapid development of neurons and wiring. Baby’s brain roughly triples in weight during the last 13 weeks of gestation, growing from about 3.5 ounces at the end the second trimester to almost 10.6 ounces at term. And it’s starting to look different, too: Its formerly once smooth surface is becoming increasingly grooved and indented (like the images of brains you’re used to seeing). There are few if any abortions at this point in a pregnancy. There is no way most aborted fetuses feel any pain because you need a brain to feel pain.
